MATT YOUMANS: Sharp money avoids Saints
As far as coach-quarterback combinations go, only a couple in the NFL inspire belief in bettors more than Sean Payton and Drew Brees. Who imagined the New Orleans Saints would be considered cutting edge and hip?
Payton recruited Brees as a free agent in 2006, and they created a high-powered offense the Saints are riding to the Super Bowl. Along the way, they embarrassed New England's Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
But next up is Peyton Manning, the league's best quarterback. If the Indianapolis Colts were coached by a beer vendor, they would have a great...

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) -- Former NFL star Warren Sapp was released from jail Sunday on $1,500 bond, a day after being arrested for allegedly choking a woman in his hotel room.
Sapp was released at about 11 a.m. Sunday -- a time the NFL Network analyst would have been helping with Super Bowl coverage.
The network has pulled Sapp off the air until it investigates the matter.
Police arrested Sapp on Saturday on one charge of misdemeanor domestic battery. An arrest affidavit says the incident happened around 5 a.m. Saturday in the former defensive tackle's hotel room at the Shore Club on...

SI's "The Decade in Sports"...
From Peter King's list of highlights at SI.com:
BEST PLAYOFF GAME (NON-SUPER BOWL):
Steelers 21, Colts 18; 2005 AFC Divisional Game
Strangest game of the decade, too. The Colts, once 13-0 and a near-lock to get to the Super Bowl, instead didn't even win a playoff game. But they certainly were in position to do it.
With a minute to go, Pittsburgh led 21-18 and was going for the kill shot. Sure-handed Jerome Bettis whammed into the middle of the Indy line for the insurance touchdown. Bam! The ball popped out on a hit by linebacker...

Donnie Black is not your typical handicapper. With an advanced degree from Columbia University, one would not readily expect Black to enter the world of professional gambling. Known across the card rooms of New York, Black has a reputation of having one of the sharpest minds in the business. As part of the huge betting syndicate that ran into trouble with the FBI in the mid eighties, Black continues his daily assault on the bookmaker's bankroll.
His expertise is computer simulations. With programs that make the average public database seem antiquated, Black has the ability to run each game on...

Are There Key Numbers in the NBA? Part 1
Recommended By: BG Sports | Archive | Free Pick
Historically, the thinking has always sort of been that because of the nature of scoring in basketball that there aren't any really important spreads. However, some bettors have felt that 4 and 5 could be considered key.
First, a little background. Key numbers are spreads (or totals) that are so likely to fall (have the final score be that exact result) that book managers do not like to move off them. In the NFL, there are several key spreads with 3 (17% of final...

Tomlin motivates with Denver's No. 1 message
PITTSBURGH (AP) -The more coach Mike Tomlin keeps talking about it, the more agitated his players get.
Exactly the response Tomlin wants from his Pittsburgh Steelers.
Tomlin keeps referring to the Broncos as having "the world's best defense,'' a reference to Denver's spot atop the NFL team yardage statistics. He mentioned it during the weekly team meeting. Before practice on Wednesday. Before practice on Thursday. And he'll likely keep saying it until game time Monday.
"We've heard coach Tomlin say it 1,000 times already this week,'' quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "They're a great...

McDonald's pulls out of Iceland
McDonald's is seen as a part of most developed economies
McDonald's is to close its business in Iceland because the country's financial crisis has made it too expensive to operate its franchise.
The fast food giant said its three outlets in the country would shut - and that it had no plans to return.
Besides the economy, McDonald's blamed the "unique operational complexity" of doing business in an isolated nation with a population of just 300,000.
Iceland's first McDonald's restaurant opened in 1993.

Food production 'must rise 70%'
Food production will have to increase by 70% over the next 40 years to feed the world's growing population, the United Nations food agency predicts.
The Food and Agricultural Organisation says if more land is not used for food production now, 370 million people could be facing famine by 2050.
The world population is expected to increase from the current 6.7 billion to 9.1 billion by mid-century.
Climate change, involving floods and droughts, will affect food production.
The FAO said net investments of $83bn (£52.5bn) a year - an increase of 50% - had to be made in agriculture...
